January 5th to the 7th marks the yearly winter meeting of the National Council of Legislators From Gaming States. The NCLGS will meet to discuss gaming topics that are relevant to state legislatures, including sports betting plus online legislative efforts including gambling and lottery games.
The National Council of Legislators From Gaming States is an organization that works to see legislation of the gaming variety advanced into law within the US. The mission of the group is to meet with lawmakers regularly to discuss issues that involve the gaming industry. Members of the group chair or belong to committees that are responsible for gaming regulation in their home states.
During the meeting later on this week will see two areas of interest covered, tribal gaming and sports betting. Topics within these areas of discussion will include casino and lottery gaming as they converge online, interstate and international compacts and the implications, pari-mutuel wagering and its intersection with daily fantasy sports and esports, as well as responsible gaming policies.
Within the tribal gaming section, a panel will be discussing how compacts should evolve due to technological changes in the industry. Online gambling will also be discussed involving tribal operators and how regulations or legalities need to be handled.
Sports betting will be discussed within several panels as the activity has been up for debate within the United States Supreme Court. Panelists to be included in the sports betting discussions include Rush Street Interactive President Richard Schwartz, Foxwoods Resort Casino Director of Online Gaming, Seth Young and more.
Also, up for discussion will be what states will be able to do to prepare to offer sports betting as the decision by the Supreme Court is on the horizon.
It seems 2018 is shaping up to see several changes possible for the gaming industry in the United States. It will be interesting to watch and see how the industry unfolds in the coming weeks and months as the decision by the Supreme Court is made as well as if any states move forward with other legislation involving gaming such as online casino and poker measures.
